University celebrates centenary of world-renowned surrealist artist with Lancashire roots

6 April 2017

Today (April 6th) is the centenary of celebrated surrealist artist Leonora Carrington (1917-2011), and Edge Hill University is marking the occasion in several ways.

Professor Roger Shannon, an Edge Hill academic with a research interest in the surrealist painter – who resided in Mexico but grew up in Lancashire – will speak at a prestigious panel event in Mexico City on April 6th, ahead of a one-day symposium at the University which will take place on June 30th.

Professor Roger Shannon said: “As a University we are proud to celebrate the life and work of Leonora Carrington. We were heavily involved in an exhibition of her work at Tate Liverpool recently and have even named one of our campus buildings after her.

“I'm delighted to be part of the centenary celebrations in Mexico City arranged by the Fundacion Leonora Carrington and supported by the Mexican Ministry of Culture. The University will also celebrate the achievements of this most Lancastrian of Mexican surrealists at a symposium as part of our month long Festival of Ideas in June.”

The Leonora Carrington Centenary Symposium on June 30th will feature keynote speaker Dr Catriona McAra from Leeds College of Art, whose co-edited book is published in Spring 2017 ('Leonora Carrington and the International Avant Garde'; editors, Jonathan P. Eburne, Catriona McAra; Manchester University Press; 2017).

Guest Speaker, Joanna Moorhead, cousin of Leonora, will discuss her new book, 'The Surreal Life of Leonora Carrington' (Little Brown, 2017).

The Symposium will also screen two new films relating to the life and work of Leonora Carrington by directors Josh Appignanesi and Teresa Griffiths.

Complementing talks by international scholars will offer creative responses to Leonora Carrington's work.
