University appoints new Chair of the Board
Professor Clive Edwards has been appointed as the Chair of Edge Hill University’s Board of Governors and Pro-Chancellor.
Clive, who has an extensive research record as a microbiologist, has served as an independent governor of Edge Hill University since 2013.
He has been involved in teaching, research and management at departmental and institutional level at the University of Liverpool in addition to serving on various national educational committees.
Clive says he is looking forward to taking over as Chair and continuing to help develop the University’s reputation for teaching and research.
“Edge Hill offers a distinctive student experience,” he said. “I’m proud of the ways in which the campus has been developed and the continual investment to improve facilities. I’m also very interested in how the University benefits the wider community, through things such as the state-of-the-art Sports Centre, The Arts Centre and the many public events on campus that contribute to the intellectual life of the region.”
Clive Edwards succeeds Bernard Laverty who has been Chair of the Board since January 2014.
Financial and management accounting expert Lisa Greenhalgh has been given the position of Deputy Chair of the Board. Lisa was appointed as an Independent Governor in 2012 and is Chair of the Audit Committee.
The Board of Governors has oversight of the educational character and mission of the University with specific responsibilities for financial probity and the effective use of resources.

Clive Edwards biography
Clive Edwards is an Emeritus Professor of Microbiology at the University of Liverpool where he was involved in research, teaching and management at departmental and institutional level. As Director of Postgraduate Research for the University for four years he has acquired considerable expertise in supervision, management and recruitment of PhD students. Nationally, he was Deputy chair of the BBSRC Training and Awards Committee which allocates a large budget as PhD studentships and postdoctoral and professorial fellowships. He was a member of the NERC Strategy and Innovation Science Board for 4 years which was responsible for funding national capability in UK natural and environmental sciences.
Clive has an extensive research record that includes publication of over 140 peer reviewed research papers, three books and the award of £4m externally funded research grants. He has also been Editor of two leading international microbiology journals. He has significant expertise in teaching and learning in Higher Education Institutions and has been external examiner at a number of UK universities.
Lisa Greenhalgh biography
A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, Lisa has a wealth of expertise in financial and management accounting.
Currently Lisa is the Chief Operating Officer of Merseyside Special Investment Fund (MSIF), a company limited by guarantee, which provides loan and equity finance to SMEs based in Merseyside and the North West.
Prior to joining MSIF in 2003, she worked for 10 years with global giant Fujitsu where in her last three years she headed up the finance function of a Fujitsu subsidiary – Multivendor Computing Division-Nordic – a supplier of IT hardware and services with a turnover of £180m.
