The award-winners of Young Wyre in Bloom 2024

9 August 2024

Throughout July schools and nurseries across the borough took part in the Young Wyre in Bloom 2024 competition, where the work teachers, staff and students do to improve their school environment through nature and sustainability, are celebrated. During the competition it was clear that that the young people in our borough have a passion for the outdoors and had a deep appreciation of nature.

The pupils are judged on three main categories; floral displays, hard and soft landscaping projects and environmental quality, all determined by the Northwest Britain in Bloom school marking sheets. The schools and nurseries work hard on their projects all year round and do this as a whole school or through specific gardening and eco clubs.

This year the variation was fantastic, showing the innovative ways our young people are exploring environmental initiatives, all supported through their schools and nurseries. One of the key things the judges noted this year was the fantastic initiative taken by the students to create their own projects, including growing watermelons from seed and raising money to contribute to bee charities, which was an entirely pupil led idea.

Judges were impressed by the number of schools with vegetable gardens, and those using the produce grown in their own kitchens, with one school even selling excess produce they had grown to the community via their honesty shop.

An overarching theme of reducing waste was prevalent with many of the participating schools and nurseries showcasing excellent initiatives and activities around recycling, with one of the schools repurposing plastic bottles brought in from pupils into an innovative greenhouse ready to be used this planting season.

Most schools have created habitats for wildlife, such as ponds for frogs, hedgehog and bug hotels, bird boxes, bee houses and watering stations and wildflower gardens to entice bees, butterflies and other insects.

Councillor Callum Baxter, Lead Member for Children and Young People commented,

“The initiative taken by our young people to take part in such a proud British tradition is amazing, with some truly fantastic displays being shown demonstrating a great deal of local talent.

“This competition has allowed Wyre to engage with nurseries and schools, which is vital as we look to take their views into consideration on a wide range of issues, not least those concerning the environment, which as seen in this project, they are keen to be a part of.”

We would like to say a huge thank you to all those that took part and look forward to visiting again next year.
