Rivington Pike beacon to light up the sky for Queen’s 90th birthday

A BEACON will be lit at Rivington Pike to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

It will form part of a chain of beacons around the UK on Thursday 21 April and is an important part of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations.

Chorley Council has registered the Rivington Pike beacon to be one of over 1,000 beacons that will be lit.  Her Majesty the Queen has agreed to light the principle beacon in Windsor and the rest of the country will follow shortly afterwards.

The beacon will be lit after sunset at approximately 8.30pm and residents are being encouraged to look out for it from their homes or close by.

Director at Chorley Council, Jamie Carson, said: “We are delighted to be participating in the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations by lighting a beacon at Rivington Pike – one of Chorley’s most popular landmarks.

“Occasions like this don’t come round very often and we wanted to make sure the Chorley borough was part of the national celebrations. 

“Rivington Pike has a history as a beacon site and the council last lit a beacon there in 2012 to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.  It was a fantastic display and could be seen by many from their homes.

“The beacon will be lit for 20 to 30 minutes, so be sure to look out for it after sunset on Thursday 21 April.”

As Rivington Pike is only accessible by foot, anyone who chooses to view the lighting from close by should consider appropriate clothing for the weather and ground conditions and is advised to take a torch for navigation purposes.
