Morecambe hotel is kept busy with key workers and delivery service
The Covid-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges for all businesses especially within the hospitality sector in Lancashire and beyond. While many restaurants, hotels and eating/drinking establishments have closed, The Best Western Lothersdale Hotel in Morecambe has remained open.
Working with various local and government authorities, The Lothersdale is providing accommodation for many key workers who are working at Heysham Power Station, Morecambe Bay gas rigs, port workers from The Isle of Man who are stranded on the mainline and temporarily housing some of the most vulnerable in society.
The hotel is also operating a very popular takeaway bistro and afternoon tea delivery service 7 days a week. Within the first 2 weeks, the reduced 6-person operational team had made and delivered around 500 takeaways to delighted customers in Morecambe, Heysham and Lancaster.
The Lothersdale Hotel has been under ownership of the Bury family for 67 years, and while they have seen the town and industry change a lot over the years, the current situation has presented a set of completely new difficulties to overcome. Current owner Paul has said ‘”We employ over 30 fantastic people in our business and had to take the difficult decision to place the majority of them on furlough.”
Luckily the government have been able to support their furloughed workforce, as is the case for many other businesses. However, for those businesses that are still open the need to cover costs on a weekly basis while still adhering to government guidelines is a challenge that The Lothersdale Hotel has had to tackle through new initiatives. Paul says; “We have been able to diversify our restaurant business to offer a take away service, our Afternoon Teas have proved exceptionally popular and provide those who are staying at home with a little luxury to look forward to.”
From delivering an afternoon tea delivery on a shovel for a lady’s 80th birthday, to taking orders from distant relatives living in Australia, The Lothersdale Hotel continues to spread a little joy and positivity during a time of uncertainty.
Towards the end of the year they are also hoping to arrange 2 events for local NHS and key workers (following government instruction), where workers can enjoy a night of entertainment, great food and lots dancing, all free of charge. This is just a small way of saying thank for the amazing work they have been doing to keep us all safe and to keep the country and communities running during these challenging times!
