Lancaster Bomber to Fly over Morecambe’s Vintage Festival

26 August 2014

Thousands are expected to gather on Morecambe’s sea front as two Lancaster Bombers fly together for the first time in 50 years over Morecambe Bay on Sunday 7th September.

The iconic aircraft will take to the skies and perform a fly past as a ‘special salute’ to all the veterans of the Bomber command and on the ground Hemingway’s Vintage Festival by the Sea will be in full swing showcasing a range of vintage vehicles and celebrating all that is great about Britain!

This spectacular focal point is scheduled to take place on Sunday 7th September at 3pm and is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see World War Two’s most recognizable British aircraft.

The Vintage Festival by the Sea takes place over 6th & 7th September and is a packed weekend of entertainment. On Saturday 6th the Breitling Wing Walkers will perform a breathtaking sequence of acrobatic manoeuvres while strapped to the top wings of the beautiful Boeing Stearman biplanes while circling Morecambe Bay.

On the ground a Classic Car show will provide a fantastic opportunity to see some fifteen original Bond Minicars that were made in Preston. Each year they had an annual driving test weekend, organised by the manufacturers, many of which took place on the promenade in Morecambe in the 1950s.

Alvis cars, with models on show ranging from the 1920s to the 1960s, are also on display over the weekend and will be sitting alongside some vintage classics situated on the Midland Hotel’s car park including a 1927 Rolls Royce, a Bentley and Morris 10, both from the thirties and a 1958 Austin.

Wayne Hemingway said: “This is an fantastic coup for the festival and will provide an amazingly memorable lasting image for what is going to be a fantastic weekend. The festival will be packed with things to do and it’s great to have so much going on in the sky and on the ground for lovers of classic vehicles.”

Commenting on the fly past, Sqn Ldr (Ret) David G. Rohrer, of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, said: "It's been something that has been in the back of our minds for many years and we always thought it would be very special to have the only two flying Lancaster bombers coming together."

He added: "To see these two airplanes with fighter escorts flying over the English countryside will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

The Hemingway family’s Vintage By the Sea Festival, led by Wayne, Gerardine and Jack Hemingway, is returning to Morecambe for its second year and combines a mix of dancing, music, fashion, glamour, film, classic cars, delicious street food, creative workshops, kid’s activities, street theatre, a vintage fairground, vintage bus tours and an eclectic vintage and up- cycled market place to browse vintage treasures.

The weekend’s programme will provide a free festival of entertainment for local residents and visitors to experience one of the most unique places to celebrate all things vintage. There will also be a vintage cycle ride and a Vintage Pooch Parade!

This year will also see the return of some of the popular ticketed events including The Torch Club, an unforgettable night of 1930s and 40s glamour and afternoon tea at the Midland Hotel.

Tickets for many of the events can be purchased by visiting the Vintage website www.vintagefestival.co.uk/events/vintage-by-the-sea or by calling The Midland Hotel 08456 015478.
