Say Cheese For Lancashire Day

21 November 2012

Marketing Lancashire today launched a social media campaign to help raise awareness of Lancashire Day, 27 November.  On this date in 1295, the first elected representatives from Lancashire were called to Westminster by King Edward I and helped form what later became known as “The Model Parliament,” England’s first legally elected legislature.

This historic date is now marked by public proclamations in districts across Lancashire and has been adopted by Lancastrians proud to highlight the county’s cultural traditions and rich heritage.

Marketing Lancashire, in partnership with multi award-winning Lancashire Cheese producer Dewlay based in Garstang, is encouraging visitors and businesses to upload ‘smiley’ photos to Visit Lancashire Facebook and Twitter pages to create a gallery that captures the warmth, friendliness and genuine welcome that awaits visitors to Lancashire.  The photo judged to encapsulate this most, will win a £100 voucher which can be redeemed in the Dewlay Visitor Centre and shop (or receive an equivalent hamper posted to a UK address).

Visitors, residents and businesses can upload their ‘smiley’ photos now, with a caption stating where they are in Lancashire. The gallery will remain in situ until the end of the year with the winner notified in the New Year.  The winner will be selected by a panel of judges looking for Lancashire’s warmest smile.

Conor Daunt, Dewlay’s Sales and Marketing Manager comments “Dewlay is a traditional Lancashire Cheese producer and is proud to be part of Marketing Lancashire’s social media campaign. Dewlay knows how important it is to maintain the county’s traditions and what better way to celebrate Lancashire Day than with a cheese that’s inextricably linked with Lancashire culture.

“The Dewlay Visitor Centre opened this summer and we now fully appreciate the value of that warm smile welcoming the visitor through the door, not just to us but to the visitor experience of Lancashire.”

Marketing Lancashire will be out and about on Lancashire Day using social media to engage with a range of visitor across the county and at the House of Commons in London, where politicians and invited guests will be treated to some fine Lancashire hospitality. The event at the House of Commons is being organised by Eric Ollerenshaw OBE MP for Lancaster & Fleetwood.

Tony Openshaw, Marketing Director of Marketing Lancashire said “For the second year Marketing Lancashire will be representing and promoting the interests of Lancashire’s attractions and visitor economy businesses at the House of Commons at a Lancashire Day event.

“It is a great opportunity to raise awareness of this special day and the importance of Lancashire’s visitor economy which contributes £3.37m to the county and supports almost 56 thousand jobs.  Lancashire is renowned for its genuine hospitality and friendliness the Say Cheese for Lancashire Day is a good humoured campaign that we hope will engage with a wide range of people all over the UK.”
