Olympic Style Success for “Team Dewlay”
With most eyes on Rio de Janeiro & the upcoming Olympic games, Garstang based cheesemakers, Dewlay have already accumulated an enviable hoard of medals and trophies making 2016 one of the most successful years for the family owned dairy.
Their most recent success came at the International Cheese Awards held at Nantwich, Cheshire on 26th – 27th July last – coincidentally an event often referred to as “The Cheese Olympics”, the 2016 show was the 119th in its history and saw an entry list exceeding an amazing 5,000 entries from more than two dozen countries all over the world. 5,000 cheeses in one large marquee in a show field is a sight that has to be seen for any cheese lover, and from the outset it was clear that to win any awards at this year’s show was not going to be easy.
Approximately 300 judges, hand-picked from all sides of the industry set about the task of judging those cheeses most worth of medals and accolades. Dewlay who came to the event with 12 major awards from other cheese competitions held earlier in the summer were cautiously optimistic as they waited at their stand for news to filter out on how the family owned dairy was doing.
“It’s always a nervous time for us as we hope that the judges are able to pick up on the unique characteristics of Lancashire Cheese” commented Nick Kenyon, who with his brother Richard own and manage the company their grandfather George Kenyon established in 1957.
“We were absolutely thrilled however that our cheese performed so well in the face of extremely stiff competition from home and abroad” Nick adds.
In total Dewlay picked up 4 very hard fought prestigious trophies, and an almost unbelievable 21 medals, 10 of which were Gold.
“We’re absolutely delighted to bring the awards back to the dairy now and congratulate our team here who work tirelessly to cement our reputation for producing award winning Lancashire cheese” Nick concludes.
