‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ from Carousel named favourite song from stage & screen
Ahead of the 'Songs from Stage & Screen' show at Lytham Festival on Sunday 9th August, organisers have embarked on a mission to find the nations favourite musical soundtrack. Of 2000 adults surveyed aged 50 and over, a narrow victory was had by show tune 'You'll Never Walk Alone' from iconic musical and film Carousel. The song is sung by Nettie Fowler in the musical but is most recognised by its associations to football clubs, particularly Liverpool FC, perhaps explaining its popularity. Second place went to the signature song of family favourite and stage smash hit Wicked; 'Defying Gravity' sung by lead character Elphaba. Tickets for 'Songs from Stage & Screen' featuring the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, Elaine Paige and Marti Pellow and more are on sale now from lythamfestival.com.
The UK has long had an affection for show tunes shown by research conducted by Lytham Festival ahead of their very special 'Songs from Stage & Screen' show headlined by Elaine Paige, Marti Pellow and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.
The research also showed that the nation's favourite musical is 'Grease', garnering 1 in 5 votes, whilst Beatles tribute production 'Let it be' surprisingly proved to be the least popular amongst over 50's. Additionally, David Tennant who is currently starring in the RSC production of Richard II topped the poll as the nation's favourite theatre actor with 30% of the vote.
Musical theatre star Elaine Paige commented;
"It is fantastic to see the nation has such an affinity with show tunes and 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is very much a classic. I will be looking forward to bringing this and other songs from the stage alive at Lytham Festival".
Tickets for 'Songs from Stage & Screen' are just £42.50 and available now from lythamfestival.com. There will be something for everyone across the week of Lytham Festival as a wide variety of music, comedy and literary stars grace the event’s stages.
