Somewhere in France at Fleetwood Museum

18 May 2015

Postcards and letters sent home from the trenches by Lancashire soldiers during World War One have gone on display in Fleetwood.

The emotional correspondence is part of an exhibition at Fleetwood Museum that looks at the way the war was documented on the front line.

Lynn Asghar, Lancashire County Council’s museum manager at Fleetwood Museum said: “This is an exhibition of postcards and letters sent home from the trenches by Lancashire soldiers.

“The exhibition looks at the unique way in which the war was recorded through postcards, in the soldiers’ own words, including the effect of censorship.

"It really brings the fact home that as well as being soldiers, the men were also husbands, fathers, brothers and sons."

The display consists of letters and postcards from Lancashire County Council's own museum and archive collections, and takes on a personal and very poignant note as it invites people to share a little part of the lives of the soldiers through their own words.

The ‘Somewhere in France’ exhibition is running until Saturday 13 June.

Entrance to Fleetwood Museum is £3 for adults and £2 for concessions. Accompanied children go free.
