2 June 2010

The results are in for the people’s choice – Best Tourism Event Award

The Lancashire and Blackpool (LBTB) Tourism Awards 2010/11 are just a week away and the public have chosen their Best Tourism Event of the Year – the only finalists to be decided by visitors to Lancashire.

Over 20,000 identified visitors to Lancashire were invited to vote for their favourite tourism event via visitlancashire.com.  Voters could choose from a wide variety of thrilling and unique events that took place throughout Lancashire; from festivals of food, dancing, walking and music to experiencing local heritage and feats of extraordinary skill such as tractor pulling.

LBTB is pleased to announce the three finalists for the Best Tourism Event of the Year 2010/11, sponsored by Fat media Ltd, Lancaster are (in alphabetical order):

East Lancashire Railway 1940s Wartime Weekend, Rossendale, in May 2009

Festival Bowland, which ran throughout 2009

World Fireworks Championships, Blackpool, from September to October 2009.

Mike Wilkinson, LBTB Chief Executive said:

“All three finalists deserve our congratulations as they have achieved the greatest number of votes from the public, making them the top three favourite events of the year. However, there has to be an overall winner and this award ultimately recognises all those involved in the delivery of a successful, unique event that captures the public’s imagination above all others.

There’s a lot at stake, as this years’ winner will follow in the footsteps of our national winner, Blackpool Illuminations.  The illuminations won the Lancashire and Blackpool Tourism Awards 2009/10 and went on to receive Gold at the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence Awards held in Brighton on St George’s Day.  Good luck to all the finalists and well done, for already being voted one of Lancashire’s top three Tourism Events.”

The overall winner of the Best Tourism Event of the year will be announced at the LBTB Tourism Awards 2010/11, which is taking place at the Mercure Dunkenhalgh Hotel, Nr Accrington on Wednesday 09 June 2010, with Michaela Strachan as the guest presenter. This year there are 14 categories ranging from Self Catering, to Best Tourism Experience and a new category, Online Marketing Award*.  The winners from LBTB awards get the chance to go through to the Northwest regional awards, which could lead to entry into the national Enjoy England Awards for Excellence.  To view the entire list of finalists go to lancashireandblackpool.com

*This award does not progress to the Northwest regional awards
